Space Invaders is a Playtech slot based on the famous arcade video game that ruled the world during the 70s and the 80s and started the whole computer gaming thing.

The game has 10 paylines, and a Cannon that will shoot Invaders and the UFO, triggering two bonus features!

Space Invaders boasts a theoretical return to player (RTP) of 96.19%, which is a decent level, and it means the game is more or less ok when it comes to payout. Although CasinoWizard would rather see an RTP of 96.5% or more, we will have to do with it.

The variance is supposed to be medium, but this is a tricky game to win, as the wins can’t ever be big enough to cover up for the losses incurred by the skinny base game.

Gameplay and paytable

The game is played on a 3×5 board which is placed into an arcade game behind thick glass as if you were a kid in the 80s playing Space Invaders arcade. The game has 10 paylines, and therefore it won’t pay too often, in fact, good wins are difficult to find in this game.

There are a total of seven symbols in the game, and the lower-paying three all pay the same and are based on the three types of invaders seen in the original Space Invaders game. Then there are three medium-paying symbols depicting the invaders in much more modern graphics, and finally the best-paying symbol, the Moon.

Space Invaders bonus features

The game has two special features, one is the Invaders Turn Wild feature, and the other is the UFO Wild feature. During the game, the Cannon will move to a random position underneath the reels. Since the positions on reels 1, 3, and 5 are protected with defense bunkers, the Cannon won’t be able to do anything.

If it moves to reel 2 or 4, the Cannon will shoot the low-win symbols (the three invaders) to turn them into a Wild symbol, if that will result in a win. Wild symbols pay 2x, and the Cannon is the only way to create Wilds, they won’t appear on the reels on their own.

Just like in the original game, which had a mysterious spaceship fly above the board, the Space Invaders slot has a UFO that will occasionally appear above the reels. If the Cannon aligns with the UFO, it will shoot it.

The UFO will then drop some Wilds onto the reels, and they’ll spin more slowly to increase the suspense, and the resulting win will probably be substantial. This is the main bonus feature of the game and the one that will be responsible for the most big wins.

Space Invaders is an online slot game that will appeal to all fans of the arcade game, but as a slot game, it’s tough to beat, even more than the arcade was.

The lack of a genuinely rewarding bonus feature hurts this slot the most, as the two small features don’t do enough to justify the losses which you’ll suffer during regular play.
