About Reel Nightmare

Normally, we associate horror-themed slots with Nolimit City slots like Serial, Mental, and Kiss My Chainsaw, but here comes an attempt from game studio Quickspin to enter the genre.

Will Quickspin follow in the footsteps of NLC and use grim and dark graphics in Reel Nightmare, or will the game use a more humorous and light take? Let’s have a look.

It turns out that Reel Nightmare is neither but something in between and resembles movie flicks like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer.

It also turns out that Reel Nightmare is a straight-out clone of Sticky Bandits Trail of Blood. Unfortunately, the whole setup worked better in a darker Wild Western setting than in this version, and we will explain why later in this review.

Reel Nightmare RTP

Reel Nightmare is available in 4 Return To Player (RTP) configurations.

These average a 87.15%, 92.07%, 94.19%, or 96.23% RTP.

The higher the RTP, the more spins you will get from your balance per average. This is why most online casinos offer their players one of the lower RTP options, as these increase their profits.

However, CasinoWizard has researched and found some premium casinos that offer players the 96.23% payout version.

Gameplay and features

Reel Nightmare is a highly volatile slot with 10 fixed pay lines. It is played on a 5-reel, 3-row game panel.

You can choose to bet from 0.10 to 100 per spin.

There isn’t a whole lot happening in the base game, as it’s mainly about landing enough wild symbols to trigger the free spins. You can still win some nice wins, though, as five wilds on a win line pay 300x the bet.

  • Free Spins = 3, 4, or 5 wilds trigger 10, 12, or 15 free spins. The triggering free spins remain locked in their positions while landing additional wilds also become sticky and add +1 spins to your total.

Reel Nightmare Bonus Buy

Quickspins don’t reveal the frequency of free spins, but we can assume that you need an average of 100 to 200 spins to trigger them.

However, if you reside in a country that allows bonus buy options, you can skip the wait and buy them immediately.

  • At least 3 triggering wilds: 100x the bet
  • 4 or more triggering wilds: 400x the bet

What’s special about Reel Nightmare?

This game is about the sticky wilds found in the free spins. Getting lucky and seeing them stick in favorable positions from the start can lead to some big wins, especially if you manage to land some additional sticky wilds in the reels.

However, apart from this feature, there isn’t much happening in Reel Nightmare.

What is the maximum win on Reel Nightmare?

One place where Reel Nightmare excels is on the max win potential, as you can win up to 17,270x the bet on the game. The sticky wilds in the free spins are your key to the big wins.

Why Reel Nightmare doesn’t get a higher score (2 out of 5 stars)

Reel Nightmare is a hit-and-miss as it had potential but became a bit vanilla as it’s not scary enough, and neither is it particularly funny.

The slot is all about sticky wilds and the base game is quite boring as it’s only about waiting for enough wild symbols to land to access the more lucrative free spins.

Some clones can be great, but this wasn’t one of them.

A missed opportunity.

Overall verdict: 2 out of 5 stars.

Reel Nightmare is officially released on July 9, 2024.
