Gameplay and paytable

Icons are split into higher and lower paying tiers. Lower paying symbols include playing card royals: 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, stylised to look a little medieval, and fitting of a fairytale. Higher paying icons are the evil witch with a pair of scissors, the concerned queen, a handsome prince with a chiselled jaw, and the old king.

Rapunzel and her hair are regular and re-spin Wilds, respectively, while the tower within which she is imprisoned is the Scatter symbol.

Rapunzel’s Tower bonus Feature: free spins and extra wilds

Regular Wilds tend to appear stacked and can substitute for all icons except for re-spin Wilds and Scatters.

When three or more re-spin Wilds land on the playing field, they stick in their positions and keep granting re-spins until a win happens. Re-spin Wilds can only appear on the second, third, and fourth reels, and can substitute for all symbols except for Scatters.

Scatters also appear on the second, third, and fourth reels, and when they occupy all three positions at the same time, the free spins are triggered. It is possible to re-activate the bonus and win eight more free spins by landing three Scatters in the second, third, and fourth reel again while the extra turns are already playing.

During the free spins bonus, every new re-spin Wild that appears grants another step up the tower.

On steps ten, fifteen, and twenty, two extra turns are added to the free spins counter, while the twenty-fifth and final step rewards two more spins and a 2x multiplier, which is awarded for all remaining turns.

The bonuses were both lucrative and interesting, a rare combination! The tower ascending mechanic makes perfect sense thematically, and adding the extra layer of player engagement will make it more memorable for them, even if they do not succeed in rescuing Rapunzel.

The re-spin Wilds are another nice touch, as they guarantee a winning combination if three or more land on the playing field. We do wish their effect worked during the extra turns, but we understand why Quickspin’s developers decided not to do that.

While the slot looks great, we had a hard time believing it launched in 2012 before we double-checked. The way the symbols are highlighted and the way Rapunzel will lean forward when free spins are about to be activated as if she spotted the prince coming her way are all fantastic visual effects for the year this game came out.

The RTP is top-notch, and the medium variance allows both casual gamblers, high rollers, and everyone in between to play and find something they like. There is a reason it is the most popular category, after all!
