Oxygen is a typical Elk Studios release: it’s highly-polished, fun, and very entertaining but not without some major flaws. We will get to those later.

Gameplay and features

Oxygen is a medium to high variance slot that is played on a 6×7 grid. Winning combinations are formed when clusters of at least 5 identical symbols appear on the reels. Winning symbols dissapear to make way for new symbol to fall into open positions.

Winning combos highlight positions on the grid and double the multiplier for said position for each consecutive win. Multipliers can grow up to x2,048.

Other features include:

• Betting starts at 0.20 and goes up to 100 per spin.
• Wilds substitute for all symbols except scatters.
• There are three types of wilds: regular wilds, Exploding Wilds and X-Blaster Wilds. The latter leaves behind a trace of indentical symbols in an x-shape.
• Symbols affected by multiple X-Blasters are turned into wild symbols.
• You can randomly land three multiplier features:
  • The Multiplier Strike feature – places a random number of multipliers on the grid.
  • The Collector feature – collects all multiplier values in view (can be persistent).
  • The Dealer feature – multiplies all multiplier values in a certain area (can be persistent).
• Three scatters trigger the free spins bonus, during which multipliers do not reset.
• Three scatters plus a persistent feature trigger the Super Bonus.
• Free games can be retriggered.

Oxygen has multiple small and big bonus buy options, which Elk Studios calls X-iter options:

• Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet: each spin has triple the chance of triggering a bonus.
• Multiplier Strike – 10x the bet for a guaranteed multiplier strike.
• Persistent Multiplier Feature – 25x the bet guarantees the persistent multiplier feature.
• Bonus Game – 100x the bet.
• Super Bonus Game – 500x the bet.

You can win up to 25,000x the bet on Oxygen. Elk Studios does not release official max win probabilities for their slots, so we are left guessing at the odds of actually landing the max win.

Oxygen is what Sugar Rush would be if it took place in vast and deep waters of the ocean, with a lot of added features such as persistent multiplier collectors, exploding wilds, mega symbols and huge progressive multipliers.

It’s a great slot, but two things keep it from getting higher score and sadly these are common Elk Studios slots’ issues:

• The 94% fixed RTP is uncomfortably low.
• Bonus rounds still feel too scripted.

Elk Studios’s bonus rounds have a reputation for starting off great in the first two-three spins, with a max win setup shining through, only to be followed by 8 or so dead spins, to be ended off with one final spin that somewhat saves the day. If only Elk Studios would allow casinos to choose from multiple RTP settings and have their bonus rounds follow a more natural path, we are confident most of their releases would be worthy of at least a four star rating.
