Avoid the weekends

These are the busiest days for Las Vegas, with many American weekend visitors from the surrounding states of California, Arizona, and Utah. The weekend prices are generally 30% to 40% higher than during the week.

Visit Las Vegas during slow periods

There are specific periods in which Las Vegas is much less busy than average. And what happens during those calm periods? Precisely, room prices go down. It’s a matter of supply and demand.

The slow periods for Las Vegas are:

• The real summer months, July and August (too hot for many people!)
• The months of December and January

Generally speaking, you’ll pay a lot less for your overnight stays if you visit during these months, rather than the others.

Avoid large conventions and major sporting events

Las Vegas is not just the entertainment capital of the world, and it is also the city with the most and biggest conventions in the world. Some conferences pull in thousands of visitors, which drives up prices enormously.

Always make sure to check if there are any significant conferences in town before you start planning. On the Las Vegas Tourism website, you can check any planned conventions per month and the number of visitors expected to attend.

Major sporting events can drive up prices as well. If there is a large boxing match, prices can really go crazy. The city is often fully booked during the Superbowl weekend and March Madness (college basketball).

Don’t just check room prices. Make sure to compare resort fees as well

No matter how annoying and unjustified they are, resort fees are not going away. All hotels on the Las Vegas Strip charge a mandatory daily resort fee. That’s how you pay for ‘extra’ facilities, like the pool, local phone calls (who does that anyway?), and WiFi. That’s right, things that are usually included in hotel prices.

The resort fee can rack up from about 22 dollars to 45 dollars per day. Make sure to always look beyond the room price.

Register for loyalty programs

You can, before leaving for Las Vegas, register for the loyalty programs at the major Strip casinos.

Some well-known loyalty programs include:

In Las Vegas, cheap does not necessarily mean bad

The Linq: right in the middle of the action and completely renovated not long ago. The Linq Hotel and Casino is a great budget option.

Excalibur: perhaps not the fanciest hotel, but the colourful castle on the Strip has a lot going for it: it’s clean, the rooms are fine, and the location is perfect (alongside the Luxor and across from the MGM Grand and New York New York). And who can resist their arcade, the aptly-named Fun Dungeon?

Luxor: how iconic is the massive black pyramid-shaped Luxor? The chambers are cheap, you get the real Las Vegas feeling, and the casino is gigantic.

Sahara Las Vegas: this hotel, which was previously known as SLS Las Vegas (and yes, Sahara before that), is located all the way on the most northern end of the Strip. The rooms are very modern, the casino and restaurants were renovated in 2019, and prices are often ridiculously low. This iconic Las Vegas hotel might not have the best location but it does offer fantastic value for the money-wise Vegas visitor. The Sahara Hotel and Casino is especially interesting if you have access to a car.

Mirage: the famous Mirage Hotel might be a little too expensive to be considered a cheap option, but it also provides a massive amount of bang for your buck. The rooms are excellent, the vibe is superb, and the people are friendly. An absolute must!

Flamingo Hotel: okay, okay. The rooms don’t measure up anymore, and the buffet is notoriously mediocre, but many Las Vegas visitors still love this hotel. The location is perfect, and the prices are always low. And how much time do you spend in your room anyway?
