CasinoWizard’s Top 10 Best Slot Sequels (and follow-ups)

One thing is for certain: there is no shortage of online slots to play nowadays. More than 50 new slots are released every month, and that is only from the leading game studios.

Then, many slot developers are working in the shadows of the big ones, trying to work their way up and creating a monster hit.

As we are seeing fewer huge (and expensive) branded slots like some years ago, a new slot trend is that game developers have turned their focus on releasing sequels and follow-ups on previously popular games.

Creating sequels and follow-ups is no easy task, though, as you need to get several factors right to please us players:

  • Enough familiar elements.
  • Not a pure copy-paste of the original.
  • New characters or features.
  • An enhanced and better version.
  • Something exciting that elevates the user experience.
  • Keeping up with recent trends.

Top 10 Best Slot Sequels

The CasinoWizard loves playing sequels and follow-ups, but some are better than others.

Well, some are really awful, too, but there is always a bit of excitement in the air when loading up a new version that might be better than the previous one.

Here, we will focus on the best slot sequels and follow-ups. These games are pure gold and examples of when game developers got it exactly right and showcase to other studios how slot sequels and follow-ups should be made.

1. Pirots 2

According to the CasinoWizard, the number one pick is Pirots 2 from ELK Studios.

This choice will probably divide players into two camps. While many see this game as their favourite slot at the moment, others can’t stand it.

The fact is that the majority prefer it, and it was ELK Studios best slot in 2023.

Why is Pirots 2 so good?

The original Pirots was a brave experiment as it doesn’t have the attributes of a standard slot but is more of a mix between a casino and a video game. You have these crazy-looking birds that move around and collect symbols in their colours when they appear in their path, and the game was a hit!

So what does Elk Studios do? They take the elements that made the first version great, add more craziness to the next version, and make it even better without increasing the max win potential, which is already on a satisfying level.

Pirots 2 is funny, different, and crazy. If you haven’t tried it yet, do so; this is a brilliant sequel.

2. Money Train 3

The Money Train series are quite special slots that don’t appeal to all players, but if you are into risky and highly volatile slots where you can win insane amounts, then these are the games you are looking for.

The original Money Train and the sequel were great, but the third version took everything to yet another level.

In Money Train 3, you play with more special symbols, a higher max win potential (100,000x), and improved graphics.

Money Train 3 is another example of how you can take something superb, do the almost impossible, and make it even better. Impressive!

3. Money Train 4

We are not done with Money Trains yet. In September 2023, Relax Gaming released the final chapter in the series, and they did it with a bang!

Money Train 4 is a worthy ending to a crazy slot series, but it’s almost too volatile to play. The game studio took their time and increased everything in this version, including the max win potential of 150,000x the bet, which stands out.

If you are looking for crazy, then look no more as Money Train 4 delivers it.

4. Dead or Alive 2

The original Dead or Alive from 2009 was one of the first slots to increase the level from low to medium volatile games to a more risky approach. Here, you could actually win some decent big wins as the max win was capped at 13,888x the bet.

The sticky wilds combined with the luring big wins made this slot a fan favourite among many seasoned players. Finally, in 2019, NetEnt released the sequel Dead or Alive 2, and it was brilliant.

It follows in the original’s footsteps but has an upgrade to modern times with improved graphics, more bonus game options, and a mouth-watering max win potential of 111,111x the bet.

Unfortunately, it is too risky for most players, but it’s nevertheless a fantastic sequel to a legendary slot.

5. Immortal Romance 2

Mention one legendary slot. Ok, think of another one. Did you think of Immortal Romance?

If you did, you are not the only one, as that is one iconic online slot released in 2012 by Microgaming.

Nowadays, the whole MG portfolio of games has been acquired by Games Global, and 12 years after the original release, they took on the challenging task of releasing the sequel Immortal Romance 2.

Is it good? -You bet it is!

The soundtrack is brilliant, the graphics are updated but still resemble the look and feel of the original, and there are loads of features and bonus games on offer.

Sequels doesnt get much better than this.

6. Legacy of Dead

Certain things in life are hard to explain. Book of Dead is one of them.

Why is BOD the most popular slot year in and year out when so many other similar versions are available, and the game doesn’t really offer anything ordinary, as the features are very straightforward and simple? It just works like magic, and online casino players enjoy it like nothing else.

Legacy of Dead is an updated version of Book of Dead where game studio Play’n GO kept the essence of BOD and made it slightly better without messing around with it too much.

This is a masterclass in how follow-ups can be made, and the proof is that Legacy of Dead still has a rock-solid position in most online casinos’ “best slots” category in the game lobby.

7. Starburst XXXtreme

The most used slot for free spins welcome bonuses in the history of online casinos is Starburst from 2012. It’s another legendary slot that most players have encountered at some point. Starburst’s low volatility setting, constant feel of small wins, and simple features have made it one of the most popular slots ever created.

Players have been waiting for a sequel, and in 2021, NetEnt decided that the wait was over.

Was Starburst XXXtreme going to follow the same guidelines as the original version, or would we see something slightly different?

What NetEnt did was unexpected and amazing at the same time – they increased the max win from 500x to 200,000x, making Starburst XXXtreme one of the slots with the highest max wins.

They literally threw the basics from the original slot out the window and created the sequel into a completely different beast.

It’s still Starburst, but it is also XXXtreme.

8. Razor Returns

Push Gaming has created many popular slots, and one of the best ones is Razor Shark.

Razor Returns is the sequel, and the slot developer made the second version even better.

It resembles the original version but everything has been enhanced, including the max win potential.

It’s another excellent option for players looking for risky slots with big-win opportunities.

9. Pirots 3

Pirots 3 was not even live yet when we wrote this top list, but we got the chance to try it before its release, and oh man, is it good.

If you enjoy playing Pirots 2, this version is also a must-try once available in online casinos on June 25, 2024.

10. Esqueleto Explosivo 2

Esqueleto Explosivo is a classic slot and one of Thunderkick’s early releases that instantly showed the slot developer’s potential and skills.

It took many years, but once the sequel Esqueleto Explosivo 2 was released, we instantly realized this game was even better than the first version.

The singing Mariachi skeleton heads do their thing again, and the multipliers are the key to the bigger wins. Don’t be surprised if we see a third edition of this game in the near future.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2 is a fun slot to play packaged with loads of humour and where you need to rack up many wins within the same spin to build up the multiplier.

Other great sequels and follow-ups

Those were CasinoWizard’s Top 10 best slot sequels and follow-ups, but some more entertaining and well-made slots deserve a shoutout.

  • Gold Blitz Extreme – If you ever tried Gold Blitz then the sequel is worth a try as it’s slightly better.
  • The Dog House Megaways – The Dog House is popular, but the Megaways version is even better.
  • Big Bass Splash – There are too many fishing-themed slots out there and the Big Bass Bonanza series is leading the way. Reel Kingdom have probably milked the concept dry soon after releasing loads of follow ups but most of them are entertaining either way.
  • Sugar Rush 1000 – Another way to indulge new life into popular slots is to release an updated version where most have stayed the same while the max win potential has been increased. Game studios add a “1000” or “100” after its title, and voila – you have a new release. Players don’t mind, though, as they get to continue to play their favorite slots but with a chance to win bigger wins.

Sequels that didn’t meet expectations

As we mentioned earlier on this page, not all sequels have been great though. Or, the sequel was not necessarily bad but since the expectations were sky-high, the outcome wasn’t as great as players hoped for leading to a feeling of disappointment instead of excitement.

These are some slot sequels that didn’t meet players’ expectations:

  • Reactoonz 2 – How can you match or excel one of the most popular slots ever created? It’s almost impossible, and Reactoonz 2 didn’t manage to do that.
  • Jammin Jars 2 – Another slot with unfairly high expectations that didn’t fulfill players’ needs. It’s still a good slot but also a disappointment.
  • Gemix 2 – The classic Gemix is often found in the most prominent positions in online casinos’ game lobbies, but the sequel is not to be found for several reasons.
  • Berryburst – It’s not an official follow-up to Starburst, but the way the title is designed resembles Starburst, so the connection is still there. Berryburst was quickly forgotten by the players, though, and NetEnt has probably done the same.

Sequels and follow-ups that we want to see in the future

What about upcoming sequels and follow-ups? We can guarantee that game studios will continue on this path, and we will get to experience many sequels and follow-ups of their most popular slots in the months and years to come. Some will be great; others should probably not see the light of day.

However, here are some titles that we would like to see shortly:

  • Wanted Dead or a Wild 2 – Wanted Dead or a Wild is CasinoWizards’ number one pick for the best Wild West slot, so it’s no wonder that we look forward to the sequel that should be in Hacksaw Gaming’s pipeline.
  • Starburst 2 – As mentioned, we already have the brilliant Starburst XXXtreme as a contrast and superb follow-up to Starburst, but it would also be great to see Starburst 2 come to life. This version would be similar to the original version, which is suitable for players looking for casual slot entertainment while avoiding the riskier types of games.
  • Reel Rush 3 – Reel Rush is a real gem and classic slot that most players have forgotten by now and that new slot players never even played. A third edition would make sense if given the attention and planning it deserves.
  • Sweet Bonanza 2 – Ok, Pragmatic Play has released an enhanced version in Sweet Bonanza 1000, and there are also other candy-themed slots out there like Sugar Rush, but Sweet Bonanza 2 would surely be interesting and fun to try.
  • Gates of Olympus 2 – One of the most popular slots today deserves a sequel, right?
  • Hotline 3 – Hotline 2 was a fun sequel, but it’s now time for a third edition. Will we see it soon NetEnt?
  • Dead or Alive 3 – It’s been more than five years since the release of Dead or Alive 2. A third edition is wanted with slightly lower volatility, maximum win potential, and some added interesting features.
  • Danger High Voltage 2 – “Danger danger, high voltage.” Big Time Gaming surely knows how to pick its odd themes, and we can’t wait for the sequel to be released. The good news is that it’s planned to go live in October 2024.
